Chora Sfakion

CHora sfakion: the crossroad of south chania

Sfakia, a remote region in the Chania prefecture of Crete, is a place of untamed natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. This mountainous area, known for its independent spirit and resistance against foreign rule, offers visitors a glimpse into a traditional way of life that has endured for centuries.

The journey to Sfakia is an adventure in and of itself. The winding road from Chania to Chora Sfakion, the main town in the region, crosses the island from north to south, offering breathtaking views of the White Mountains and the Libyan Sea. Along the way, you’ll pass through the picturesque villages, gorges and the real adventure begins.

Chora Sfakion: A Charming Seaside Village

Nestled along the southern coast of Crete, Chora Sfakion (or Hora Sfakion) is a charming seaside village that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and authentic Cretan culture.

Located approximately 75 km from Chania and 150 km from Heraklion, it is a small seaside village with a picturesque harbor.

This small village serves as the capital of the Sfakia region, known for its rugged mountains and stunning coastal scenery.

In the summer months, visitors can enjoy the quiet and calm of the village, sipping coffee or enjoying a meal at one of the seaside cafes and taverns.

For those who enjoy panoramic views like I do, there are many accommodations and restaurants up the nearby hills that surround the village.

Visitors to Sfakia can explore the village’s charming streets and traditional architecture, including its historic churches and stone houses.

The village is also a popular starting point for hikes through the nearby gorges and a hub for boat trips to the surrounding areas.

A Historical Overview

Chora Sfakion is well-known for its resistance to both Venetian and Turkish occupations.

The formidable White Mountains to the north, paired with the stony beaches to the south, enabled the natives to repel any invasions

Notably, Daskalogiannis, a celebrated Cretan hero who led uprisings against Turkish rule in the 18th century, was born in Anopolis, near Chora Sfakion. His field of action was mostly here!

His legacy is a source of pride for the locals, and his name is honored in various places, including the airport in Chania.

The village thrived during Venetian and Turkish invasions, maintaining a profitable trade with its own modest fleet until the 18th century.

It was reported to have a hundred churches, but it was severely damaged by WWII bombing during the Battle of Crete and the subsequent Allied evacuation.

The village played a significant role during the Battle of Crete in World War II, showcasing the indomitable spirit of its inhabitants.

The Warmth of Sfakian Hospitality

Sfakia is famous for its hospitality, with locals welcoming visitors with open arms.

The region’s tavernas, cafes, and guesthouses provide a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making you feel like part of the community.

Whether you’re enjoying a meal at a taverna or staying in a charming guesthouse, the warmth and friendliness of the Sfakian people will enhance your travel experience.

The sign in the photo has a Mantinada (famous short Cretan poems) written on it, which translates to (open translation):

“My beautiful homeland, in whatever corner i stand, all i want to see is Sfakia written on the sign…”

This Mantinada is meant to show how much pride and love, the locals, have for their region!

Cretan Pride and culture

One of the most appealing aspects of Sfakia is its commitment to preserving traditional Cretan culture.

The locals are known for their strong sense of identity and pride in their heritage.

Visitors can experience this firsthand through the region’s culinary delights, traditional music, and local festivals.

The cuisine in Sfakia is a highlight, with dishes like Sfakian pies (cheese-filled pastries drizzled with honey) and fresh seafood showcasing the flavors of Crete.

One of the taverns we highly recommend is called “Mesochori”. It is located 80 m above sea level in a quiet district of the village! In their dishes, they use exclusively local products (many of them they they own like meat, olive oil, honey, etc.)

NEarby destinations

Fort of sfakia "Castel di Sfakia"

Chora Sfakion is literally a crossroad for many destinations in the general area of Sfakia. Before we jump into the further away destinations, let’s take a look at what there is to see in the nearby vicinity.

As we mentioned in the beginning, Chora Sfakion is known for its picturesque harbor. One way to enjoy it is by having a coffee or a meal at the bay or getting a boat to a destination.

But if by any chance you love panoramic views like me, a great way to see the harbor is by getting to the small fort (Castel di Sfakia), located on a hill next to the municipality building.

Church of Saint anthony

The Church of Saint Anthony in Chora Sfakion is a quaint and picturesque site that reflects the village’s deep-rooted traditions and spiritual heritage.

Tucked away in the stunning backdrop of the Lefka Ori mountains, this small church is dedicated to Saint Anthony, the patron saint of lost things, and is a place where locals and visitors alike come to seek solace and peace.

Its simple yet charming architecture, characterized by traditional Cretan stonework, creates a serene atmosphere that invites contemplation.

The church not only serves as a spiritual haven but also stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the Sfakian people, who have preserved their customs and beliefs through the ages.

Visitors often stop by to admire the beautiful surroundings and experience the tranquil ambiance, making it a must-see when exploring the captivating village of Chora Sfakion.

In order to access the church, you have to climb up some stairs, which takes less than 10 minutes.

nearby beaches

South Crete is known for its beautiful, crystal-clear seas and its sandy beaches. In the vicinity of Chora Sfakion, we recommend three beaches, and whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed!

The first and closest beach to the village is called Vrisi Beach! Vrisi Beach is right next to the village (not more than 10 minutes by foot) and features turquoise waters and cliffs as a backdrop.

For the next two beaches, we are leaving the village behind. They are close, and people often get to them either by following the E4 trail or by car.

Iligas Beach is a beautiful turquoise-water sandy beach located 1 km west of Chora Sfakion.

There are three beaches, separated by breathtaking sea caves.

The main beach is longer and accessible via a short walk from Sfakia-Anopolis’ main road.

The remaining beaches are located to the east of the former and are only accessible by boat or by swimming from the main beach.

On each of the three beaches, there are numerous caves where you can shelter yourself from the sun.

Finally, the third beach is Glyka Nera (meaning: Sweet Waters). This pebbled beach features clear blue waters, which got a top 20 spot in Europe by the London Times.

Generally, the only way to reach Glyka Nera is by boat. However, for the more daring, there is a road coming here from Chora Sfakion (30′ from the nearest parking place above Iligas Beach) and another way from Loutro (60′, however, hiking near the edge is rather stressful).

Despite the distressing vistas, the path is secure because it is often conserved by local authorities and is part of the European E4 pathway.
