Mili Gorge

Mili Gorge: An abandoned 20th-century industry

Mili Gorge, actually a ravine, is a captivating destination that offers visitors a mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a tranquil escape from bustling city life. It has two main entrances, and they are both a short drive from Rethymnon. This lush gorge, dotted with ruins of old mills and abandoned homes, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Geological Features

Mili Gorge stretches approximately 4 kilometers in length, offering a relatively short but highly rewarding hiking experience.

The terrain is characterized by lush vegetation, rocky paths, and occasional streams, creating a cool and shaded environment even during the warmer months.

The gorge will reward you with stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and a variety of plant and animal species.

These features make it accessible for hikers of varying skill levels while still offering a sense of adventure.

A Glimpse into History

Mili Gorge derives its name from the Greek word for “mills” (o milos – oi miloi for plural), as the area was once home to numerous water mills that powered local industries.

During its peak, the gorge supported a small thriving village called Mili, which was divided into two neighborhoods, Ano Mili (Upper Mills) and Kato Mili (Lower Mills).

The villagers’ profession was mostly millers, and they were processing almost all cereals in the surrounding area.

It was an ideal location for the mills since the water runs all year long and kept them going.

Despite all the mills in the area, the water helped raise many gardens with fruits and vegetables.

Unfortunately, the village had to be abandoned during the mid-20th century.

The last residents left Mili in 1972, creating a village called Nei Mili (New Mills) just above the gorge.

The reasons for this abandonment were mainly tied to urbanization, rockslides and the difficulty of maintaining a livelihood in such a remote and rugged area.

Today, the remnants of the mills and stone houses serve as poignant reminders of the village’s once-bustling life.

One of the mills was renovated so visitors can have an idea of what it looked like.

Also, some houses have been renovated, and one cafe-restaurant is near the South entrance.

Entrances to Mili Gorge

Mili Gorge has two main entrances:
Northern Entrance (Xiron Village): This is the more accessible entry point, especially for those arriving by car. There is parking nearby, making it convenient for visitors who wish to start their hike without much effort. The distance from Rethymnon city by car is about 5 km to Xiron Village.

Southern Entrance: While slightly more challenging to access, this entrance is popular with guided tours and offers a more immersive start to the journey through the gorge. The distance from Rethymnon city by car is about 7 km to Xiron Village.

Most guides recommend starting from the northern entrance if comfort and ease are a priority, especially for families or those less experienced with hiking. Alternatively, the southern entrance provides a more adventurous experience and is often favored by hikers.

Note: The path and the hiking are not difficult. Of course, it needs your attention. The path from the southern entrance is more of a downhill hike and the opposite if you choose the northern entrance.

The path in Mili Gorge / South entrance

During my visit to Mili Gorge, I chose the southern entrance. Exploring Mili Gorge offers a wealth of sights and experiences.

The first encounter was the cavernous church of Saint Anthony. This charming little church is nestled within the rocks and adds a spiritual element to the journey.

At some point, you will find a crossroad. Taking the right path will lead you to Ano Mili, and following the bridge on the left will take you to the cavernous church of Saint John.

We are now moving towards the Upper Mili neighborhood. You can inspect gardens and houses lost inside the lush vegetation, and only the sound of the birds and water will cover your thoughts.

As you hike along the stream, there are plenty of picnic tables where you can catch your breath and rest all along the path.

The cafe-restaurant is located in this neighborhood, and it is only open during the summer season.

It is a great place to have a meal or a coffee while you take in the views of the gorge.

Continuing along the path, you will discover the decaying yet picturesque structures that tell the story of the gorge’s industrious past.

There is a renovated mill, as we mentioned above, where you can get a small idea of what the rest look like in the interior.

Its a one-room structure with a small container-like part and the stone that turned with water and processed the cereals.

Just a few meters away, you will reach one of the largest springs of the gorge, named Five Virgins spring.

A small waterfall is forming, and you can take a bath if you wish under the shade of the huge plane trees.

If you decide to swim in the pond, please avoid applying sunscreen because it may harm vulnerable flora and fauna along the stream. Otherwise, you can just take some photos or just have a rest.

All along the way, try to take in the views and the nature and enjoy every minute.

The fresh air, the water sounds, the rustling of leaves from a breeze, and the stunning views from higher grounds all contribute to an unforgettable experience!

After passing through bridges, picturesque buildings and the spring, you will find yourselves at a crossroads.

Taking it right will lead you into more abandoned buildings that have been almost completely swallowed by nature, and the terrain is more uneven.

If you continue the path straight ahead, you will find yourselves in front of an arch that marks the beginning of the Lower Mili (Kato MIli) neighborhood.

Before you descend, just take a look at the gorge. You will see your next encounter, and you can take really beautiful pictures.

Passing through more beautiful arches in between houses, you will reach the church of Saint Paraskevi.

A beautiful stop there to inspect the church and its surroundings could be rewarding.

The final destination is a crossroad leading to either a cantina called Banana, which has a beautiful tropical vibe, or the road leading to the exit/northern entrance of the gorge at Xiron Village.

If you choose the road for a break at the cantina, you can see the cavernous church of Saint Nicholas and some renovated stone houses.

something extra for the explorers

There is one more destination that is worth mentioning in this article. Either you decide to visit Mili Gorge from North or South, you can still visit it, but I have to say it is more convenient if you choose the southern entrance just because it is close to there.

That destination is the Venetian Monastery of Halevi. This historic monastery dates back to the 16th century.

Although deserted, its defensive architectural style and the single aisle church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary stand as testaments to its storied past.

The monastery features striking flame-shaped windows and ruins of monastic buildings that hint at its former significance.

Restoration efforts would undoubtedly highlight its cultural and architectural value.

How to Get There

Mili Gorge is located approximately 8 kilometers southeast of Rethymno.

To reach the gorge:
By Car:

The northern entrance has nearby parking, making it the most convenient option for drivers. But that shouldn’t discourage you if you decide to enter from the south entrance. Along the street at the south entrance there are openings where you can park, and you will probably find space if you visit early in the morning.

By Public Transport:

From Rethymnon, if you take a KTEL bus towards Chromonastiri, it can drop you near the gorge’s southern entrance. Unfortunately, we can’t be sure about the stops. Before you have your ticket, ask them about the stops.

By taxi:

You can also have a taxi or a private car to get you there, but we can’t be sure about the cost of the trip.

Guided Tour:

Many local operators offer tours that include transportation and a knowledgeable guide to enhance your visit.
