Preveli monastery is located on the southern shores of Rethymno and is composed of 2 complexes, Piso Preveli (meaning: behind/rear) and Kato Preveli (meaning: down/lower). The historic Piso Preveli Monastery stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and Cretan heritage. With a stunning backdrop of the Libyan Sea and surrounded by rugged mountainous terrain, it is a peaceful getaway. The Two Monasteries of Preveli

1. Piso Preveli (Upper Monastery)

Piso Preveli, the main monastery, is still active today and welcomes visitors.

It is located just above the famous Preveli Palm Beach, and many visitors after they pay a visit to the monastery end up there for a swim.

It is dedicated to St. John the Theologian and features a beautiful central church, or Katholikon, dating back to the 16th or 17th century. Inside, visitors can admire impressive frescoes, carved wooden iconostasis, and religious relics.

The monastery also houses a small but informative museum that showcases historical artifacts, rare manuscripts, and sacred icons, including the legendary Holy Cross of Preveli, which is believed to have miraculous properties.

Throughout its history Piso Preveli has been a center of resistance and refuge, particularly during the Ottoman occupation and World War II.

During the Ottoman occupation, they were gathering and safeguarding weapons and ammunition for the cause.

During WWII, the monks provided shelter to Cretan rebels and Allied soldiers, playing a vital role in the island’s fight for freedom.

2. Kato Preveli (Lower Monastery)

Located closer to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, just 1.7 km from Piso Preveli, Kato Preveli was historically used for agricultural purposes, supplying the upper monastery with food and resources.

It is older than the Piso Preveli complex, and it was called Monastery of Megalos Potamos.

There is still a bridge standing over the stream built by the monks.

The monastery is now mostly in ruins since it was destroyed and looted multiple times by multiple occupators, but visitors can still explore its remnants, including a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist as well as the whole complex.

The peaceful setting, surrounded by olive groves and the sounds of nature, makes it an ideal spot for a reflective walk.

How to Get There

By Car:

The easiest way to reach Preveli Monastery is by car. It is about 35 km south of Rethymnon town, with well-marked roads leading to the site.

By Public Transport:

Buses from Rethymnon to Plakias run regularly. From Plakias, a taxi or a rented vehicle can take you to the monastery.

By taxi:

A convenient but more expensive option from Rethymnon or Plakias. We can’t be sure about the cost of the trip.

Visit Early or Late Afternoon!

Avoid peak hours for a quieter experience and better lighting for photos. Opening hours: from mid-May until mid-September, daily from 09.00–13.30hrs and from 15.30–18.30hrs. In the winter months, daily from 09.00 till 17.00 hrs.

Dress Modestly!

As a religious site, respectful attire is required. Avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless tops. For women, try to cover your shoulders and anckles.
