rethymnon District: A Journey Through History and Beauty

Rethymnon district, located between the prefectures of Chania and Heraklion, is a region rich in history and natural beauty. Its capital, Rethymno, is located on the northern coast of Crete. From its ancient roots to its stunning landscapes, Rethymnon offers a variety of attractions for visitors. This article delves into the historical significance of the area and highlights some of the best destinations to explore, including religious sites, archaeological wonders, beautiful beaches, gorges, caves, charming villages, and city sights.

A Cultural Tapestry in Crete

Rethymnon’s roots stretch back to the Minoan period, with traces of settlements and palatial remains scattered throughout the region. The ancient city of Rithymna emerged during the Minoan civilization, flourishing between 2600 BC and 1100 BC. It was significant enough to mint its own coins.

Over the centuries, it has been influenced by the Venetians, Ottomans, and Greeks, each leaving a unique mark on the area. The Venetian Harbor and Fortezza Fortress, located at the old town of Rethymno, are prime examples of this blend of cultures. Built in the 16th century, the Venetian Fortress still stands as a symbol of the city’s resilience and rich heritage, offering a glimpse into Rethymnon’s past.

Specifically, most of the old town of Rethymno was built by the Republic of Venice and had the name Retimo. Later, during the Ottoman occupation, the Turks referred to the town as Resmo

Moreover, there are many mosques blended into the old town’s architecture, such as the Neratze Mosque, the Mosque of the Great Gate, and Kara Musa Pasha Mosque. In addition, there are plenty of other religious destinations dating from the Venetian era, like the church of Our Lady of Angels in the center of the old town, and of course more modern churches like the Cathedral church of Panagia dedicated to “The Presentation of the Mother of Lord.”.
