Triopetra Beach

Triopetra Beach: A Majestic Coastal Escape in South Rethymnon

Located on the southern coast of Rethymnon Prefecture, Triopetra Beach is one of Crete’s most mesmerizing destinations. Known for its vast sandy shore, crystal-clear waters, and the iconic rock formations that give the beach its name, Triopetra is a true gem for those seeking tranquility, natural beauty, and unforgettable sunsets.

The Name and Landscape

Triopetra, meaning “Three Rocks” in Greek, takes its name from the three massive rock formations that rise from the sea at the western end of the beach.

These natural sculptures create a striking contrast with the golden sand and the deep blue of the Libyan Sea.

The surrounding landscape is rugged yet captivating, offering a sense of untouched wilderness.

There are actually two beaches that are separated by the small peninsula created by these three rocks.

Visitor Information

As we mentioned above, the beach is separated into two parts. This means you have the choice, and choose whichever suits you.

The smaller beach, or Koumado (east of the peninsula), is a sandy and rocky bay.

The beach is organized with umbrellas. In addition to that, you can find comfortable rooms to stay in and tavernas to enjoy your meal.

Nearby towards the south there is a beautiful little harbor called Stomio.

The main and larger beach of Triopetra, also called Chatzi, is more pebbly than the first.

There you will also find umbrellas, rooms and tavernas for you to enjoy your beach day. If you have your own beach equipment, there is plenty of space to set up your umbrella.

Triopetra beaches seem not that crowded, even in summer, except on the weekends when families go to enjoy the sea.

Definitely a great destination from late spring to early autumn and its popularity is growing.

Both beaches feature beautiful sunsets and deep blue, clear waters.

Best time to visit

The beach is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is warm, and the sea is inviting. Sunsets at Triopetra are particularly breathtaking, with the sky turning shades of orange, pink, and purple as the sun dips below the horizon.
