Ideon Cave: The Legendary cave where Zeus grew up

Ideon Cave (or Ideon Andron) is located on the slopes of Mount Ida (Psiloritis), Crete’s tallest mountain, and is a site steeped in myth and history. The distance of the cave from Anogia is 24 km, and from Rethymno it’s 78 km. This cave, even though it has no special geological or speleological value, has captivated visitors for centuries with its rich mythology, archaeological significance, and breathtaking natural surroundings. The cave is widely known as the place where Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, grew up and built up his strength to kill his father Cronus and save his siblings from his belly. Mythological Significance

According to Greek mythology, Ideon Cave was the refuge where Zeus was hidden as an infant to protect him from his father, Cronus.

Fearing a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, Cronus devoured all his offspring.

However, Zeus’s mother, Rhea, secretly gave birth to him in the Dikteon Cave, and then the baby god was transferred to the Ideon Cave in order to grow.

There his mother entrusted him to the care of the nymph Melissa and the mythological goat Amalthea.

Besides the care of the nymph, Zeus was protected by local soldiers called Kouretes.

They were the ones guarding the entrance of the cave, and legend has it that every time the god cried, they were clashing their shields with their swords, covering the noise so Cronus didn’t hear him.

Another version of this is that every time Zeus cried, they were performing a dance so their armor could cover the noise.

This dance, they say, is the ancestor of the traditional Cretan dance Pentozalis.

Archaeological and Historical Importance

Ideon Cave has been a site of worship since the Minoan period, around 2000 BCE.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts, including bronze figurines, pottery, tools, and votive offerings, attesting to its long history as a place of reverence.

These findings suggest that the cave served as a significant religious sanctuary, drawing worshippers from across Crete and beyond.

Today, many of these artifacts are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, providing further insight into the cave’s historical importance.

One of the most important findings were the copper shields that picture Zeus with his guards (Kouretes) holding drums.

Also near the entrance, you can see the altar where ceremonies took place in ancient times.

The cave is located at an altitude of 1500 meters and has an area of 800 sq. m., which is divided internally into three rooms and the sanctuary.

It is easy to navigate and features a large central hall with a natural dome-like ceiling.

Access to rooms is on a descending slope, while there are a few points where the visitor can discern some parts of cave decoration.

How to Get There

By Car

The cave is about 75 km southeast of Rethymno. Drive toward Anogeia and follow signs for the Nida Plateau. From there, the cave is accessible via a short hike.

By Tour

By taxi
