Richtis Gorge

Richtis Gorge: A product of millenia of erosion

Richtis Gorge is located in Lassithi Prefecture, on the north side of Crete, between the cities of Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The trail starts just outside the village Exo Mouliana and ends on the Richtis beach, east of the village Kalavros. This gorge is a paradise for hikers as it combines stunning landscapes and diverse geological and ecological features.

Geological Features

Richtis Gorge is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long, but it is packed with natural splendor.

The gorge’s landscape is the product of millennia of erosion by the Richtis River, which flows year-round,unusual in Crete, and is utilized to water crop farms.

Natural springs and periodic rains have carved deep ravines and complicated routes through the gorge.

Fossilized bones and mineral deposits discovered within the gorge shed light on its geological history and the environmental conditions that led to its development.

Natural Beauty and Biodiversity

Richtis Gorge is renowned for its lush vegetation, which includes platanus trees, oleander, wild berries, and a variety of local herbs like sage and others whose smells are going to accompany you along your hike.

The area is also home to diverse wildlife, including butterflies, small reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Hikers can expect to encounter old stone bridges and remnants of water mills along their journey.

The trail leads to the Richtis Beach, and it is approximately 3-4 hours depending on your pace with an elevation difference of about 350 meters, offering moderate to challenging hiking experiences depending on the season.

The Trail

The trail, as we mentioned above, starts from the village of Exo Mouliana, and it is well-marked all the way.

Many people park their cars on the main road of the village, and then they walk the paved road until the bridge of Lachanas.

You can gain at least 30 minutes of hike if you continue and park your car at the nearby parking lot of the bridge.

Then you can continue your hike from there.

At the start of the trail lies the Lachanas Bridge, an arched stone structure built in the 19th century.

This bridge, surrounded by dense vegetation, is a picturesque reminder of the region’s rich past and the engineering skills of its builders.

A tragedy took place here on this bridge. During the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in 1923, it is said that the Christians killed the Turks of the region who were attempting to reach Sitia and board the ship to Turkey.

Scattered along the trail are remnants of old water mills that showcase traditional Cretan engineering and offer glimpses into past agricultural practices.

The gorge’s most notable feature is certainly the waterfall that gave the gorge its name.

Richtis (which means waterfall in Cretan dialect) is almost 20 meters high and flows steadily even throughout the summer months.

The waterfall and its pond below create a picturesque setting ideal for photography, relaxation, and a refreshing swim.

If you decide to swim in the pond, please avoid applying sunscreen because it may harm vulnerable flora and fauna along the stream.

Reaching the waterfall from the starting point (Lachanas Bridge) takes around one and a half to two hours.

The trail ends at Richtis Beach, which is less than 30 minutes from the waterfall.

The beach itself is a secluded pebble cove shaded by tamarisk trees and with beautiful crystal-clear waters.

The beach can get wavy if the weather is windy (due to its north-facing orientation) and may prove the swimming not enjoyable if not difficult.

It is usually combined with a visit to the gorge, and it is a refreshing reward after a great hike.

There are no amenities nearby, so it would be for the best to have some food with you.

This serene spot features stone tables and a fountain providing fresh drinking water where you can refill your water bottles as there is fresh potable water all the year.

Alternative route

If hiking is not your cup of tea or you have your family with you with young children and you really want to visit Richtis Waterfall, then we have the solution for you.
