Sfendyli Village & Aposelemis Dam

SFENDyLI: THE CRETAN ATLANTIS

Atlantis is a legendary island described in Plato’s books Timaeus and Critias as a metaphor on national hubris. However, the island of Crete has its very own “Atlantis” called Sfendyli. Sfendyli is a seaside community 40 kilometers southeast from Heraklion (46 minutes by car), in the artificial lake created by the Aposelemi dam, that rose to prominence a few years ago when it began to sink, only to emerge from the sea again. The abandoned village has been submerged and then resurfaced for the past 17 years as a result of the Aposelemi dam, which was erected in the vicinity.

history and geography

Sfendyli, which was founded in the 16th century, was buried within the confines of Aposelemis Dam’s artificial lake. The residents were forced to evacuate and received compensation by the state for their property. As the water levels fluctuate, the settlement emerges from the depths, attracting a large number of people, especially when the water recedes. The earliest trace of the village dates back to 1577, as recorded by Fr. Barozzi, and in 1583, it is referred to as Sfendigli with a population of 78 inhabitants. The name of the settlement is derived from the Cretan family name Sfendilos

Archaeologist Athanasia Kanda recently uncovered 65 skeletons in the region, which are thought to be from a Minoan cemetery

Today, Sfendyli remains submerged beneath the tranquil waters of the reservoir. The sight is both eerie and captivating as the ghostly outlines of buildings, including the local church, become visible when the water level recedes. It’s a surreal experience to explore the sunken village, with water gently lapping at the buildings, offering a unique and almost mystical ambiance.

Aposelemis dam

Aposelemis Dam, near the villages of Potamies and Avdou, is Crete’s largest water supply project. It was finished in 2012 to solve the critical demand for water supply and irrigation in the northern section of eastern Crete, from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos. Specifically, it receives water from the Lasithi Mountains and has a capacity of more than 30,000,000 m3, making it the island’s largest manmade lake. The region around Aposelemis has become a wetland, providing habitat for a variety of bird species.
