Kokkini Ammos Beach is located in south-central Crete. Therefore, it is quite a distance if your accommodation is in, for example, Heraklion.You can get there either by car or bus. Having a car in Crete is a must so you can get around easily without getting tied to the public transportation’s program.

Getting there by car will take you approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, and by bus it will take a little more than 2 hours to reach Matala. Please note that these times are approximate and can vary. Getting to Matala, which is also a beautiful destination, there are two ways to get to Kokkini Ammos, which is just 2 km away and worth visiting. The first involves a steep climb, followed by a steep descent to the beach. Starting from the center of Matala, follow the road opposite the “Zafira” cafe until the paved road ends. Then continue along the path up to the top of the plateau. The walk is very pleasant, as there are some good panoramic views of Matala Bay. The second route is clearly more passable. Continue towards the city center until you reach Cafe Bar ‘Marinero‘. Go left up the uphill path until you reach ‘George‘ and ‘Mythos‘ cafes. Continue taking the path left again towards the old building. Its course will take you over the hill straight to the beach. It would be good to have enough supplies with you for the walk as well as for your day at the beach. Red sand beach was the only official Greek beach to be named “in the world’s best nudist beaches.”
